Intersection of

Color, Costume Design, and Identity

Why these films?

The DFS presented ten films throughout the Fall 2020 term, but only four were chosen for the purpose of analysis. Whether through artistic elements or personal connections, the audience can resonate with these narratives. The self-alienation in Lady Bird, queer black masculinity in Moonlight, unity and uniqueness in Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse, and comedic ingenuity in What We Do in the Shadows allow viewers to escape and reframe their perspectives in novel ways. This is the essence of film.

Why the thread of identity?

Each film employs color via costume design to convey tension between characters, exclusion from others, or inner turmoil. Changes in the colors of the characters' clothing coincide with plot developments. The films share a common narrative, in which the protagonists feel isolated from those who surround them. In recognizing the intersection of color, clothing, and self-identity, the following four analyses explore how such a dynamic develops throughout each film.
